Sammontana

Sammontana is located in the low hills of Montelupo a town know for its elegant pottery. Once belonging to the Medici Family the decadent beauty of Count Dzieduszycki's villa and adjacent Romanesque Church is the setting for this classic style of Tuscan wine. The impressive cellars house 24 large antique Italian vats now retired but too beautiful to discard and so they stand guard allowing more modern winemaking methods to proceed while maintaining Sammontana's traditional style of wine.

2000 Maestro IGT

Winemaking, Vineyards & Growing Season:
60% Sangiovese, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.  The vineyard "Maestro" is situated on top of a west-facing hill in the valley of the Arno River. The vineyard is named after the man who tended and pruned it for years. The soil is calcium rich and medium texture with a good balance of minerals. The vines are pruned and trained in the "cordone" spur method. The grapes are harvested by hand in late September. Maestro is aged partially in barriques and partially in oak casks of 20- hectoliter capacity. After nearly a year, the wine is blended, bottled and left in a dark fresh cellar for another two years for further refinement.
